Chaplain
Fr. Jim Chern
Father Jim Chern's journey is a testament to the power of faith and dedication in service to others. Born in 1973, Jim felt a calling to the priesthood from an early age. Supported by his loving parents, George and Jo Ann, and his brothers Christopher and Craig, he pursued his passion for theology and philosophy at DeSales University.
After completing his Master's degree at Seton Hall, Jim was ordained in 1999, embarking on a lifelong mission to guide and inspire others. His warmth and compassion shone through during his seven years at Our Lady of Lourdes, where he touched countless lives as a parochial vicar.
In 2007, Father Jim found his true calling as chaplain and director of the Newman Center at Montclair State University. His ability to connect with young people and nurture their spiritual growth has made him a beloved figure on campus. Recognized for his exceptional work, he was appointed Director of Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of Newark in 2018.
Father Jim's impact extends far beyond the university walls. His relatable approach and genuine care for others have earned him the affectionate title of "America's favorite college campus minister." Through his ministry, he continues to inspire and guide young adults, helping them navigate life's challenges with faith and compassion.
Campus Minister
Sebastian Perez
After coming to know the Lord in 2018, Sebastian spent six months with Youth With a Mission, a Christian ministry based in Tyler, Texas. There, living in community with 30 other young men and women, he immersed himself in Biblical teachings, worship, and service. The program culminated in a trip to South Korea where he participated in street evangelization, volunteered with local churches, and led a week-long youth ministry retreat.
This experience prompted him to pursue theological studies at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. After spending one year there, he discovered the beauty of Catholicism, received his Sacraments of Initiation, and transferred to Franciscan University of Steubenville to complete his studies, graduating in 2024 with his Bachelor of Arts in Theology. Sebastian is excited to share his story of conversion and his deep love for the Catholic Faith with the students at Montclair State University!
Office Manager
Tiffany Cortez
Tiffany has been blessed with opportunities to serve the Church in various ways throughout her life. She worked as a religious education teacher for 8 years, and founded a youth group in her parish in 2018 that she continues to coordinate. After graduating from Caldwell University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, as well as a Minor Certification in Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Tiffany devoted time in prayer to discern the plan God had for her life.
She spent a semester at the University of Hartford pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology but ultimately felt the Lord calling her back to New Jersey to focus her efforts on serving the Church. She is currently completing her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and continues to prioritize living a life of faith, service, and evangelization.
Tiffany has a special devotion to Our Lady of Fatima and has always felt Her guidance and intercession throughout her life. She is grateful for the opportunities God has prepared for her, including being a part of this wonderful team at Montclair State University, and is very excited to begin this mission with all of you!
